Doing W2 & W3 for 2025 before the end of year due to sale of business. When attempting to do only tax year 2024 comes up

The issue you're running into in QuickBooks is the result of the software design. W-2 and W-3 forms for the current tax year (2025) aren't available in QuickBooks until the beginning of the following calendar year (January 2026).
