Has Intuit solved the issue with the additional assessment for MN UI?  We now have a 14% additional assessment and need to know how to add that as a payroll item.  Any solutions for this??

Hi there, Jstorlie. Adhering to the Minnesota Unemployment Insurance (UI) Additional Assessment is essential for accurate payroll and compliance with regulations.

To address the additional 14% assessment, you can add and update it within your QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Item List.

Here's how:

  1. Open the Lists menu, then select Payroll Item List.
  2. Find and double-click the State Surcharge item.
  3. Click Next, then follow the onscreen steps.
  4. On the Company Tax Rate page, enter the new rate as a percentage.

Once you save the changes, QuickBooks will automatically calculate the assessment during payroll processing.

I also need to do this.  I do not have a State Surcharge to double click in my payroll item list.

I appreciate you replying on this thread, Podsauto. Since you don't have the option for the State Surcharge item, I suggest a different approach by clicking the MN Unemployment Company item list to edit the tax rate directly.

You may follow the steps on the article provided by my colleague above. This lets you make adjustments directly, ensuring your payroll calculations stay accurate. Additionally, please ensure that your QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Payroll Tax Table are up to date.

After manually adding the tax rate, you can do a payroll liability adjustment to a specific period if necessary.
