Question

Payroll - FIT Rounding

When using QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced payroll (for accountants), QB is rounding all of my federal withholding amounts to the nearest dollar. So for instance instead of being $53.68 it is $54. This happens for every check in the impacted files. Not all client files are impacted by this issue. What would cause it to round. It’s not a huge deal just really annoying.

I’ve done updates, repaired the file, and the item is set-up correctly. I’ve also had this problem in a brand new file. Nothing works to fix this.

QuickBooks Desktop payroll defaults to the IRS Wage Bracket Method, which is why the FIT calculation rounds to the nearest whole dollar.

You will generally only see cents on the FIT line for employees with a unique tax profile, such as an extra withholding amount that includes decimals. This structural rule is why the behavior varies between your different client files.

For comparison, QuickBooks Online Payroll uses the Percentage Method to calculate FIT, which naturally calculates exact math and displays the amounts with decimals.

For example, if I create the exact same employee profile in one of my client’s QuickBooks desktop company file and then the exact same employee profile in another one of my client’s QuickBooks desktop company file. In one file the FIT is $54 and in another is $53.68. The only thing different is the company file. I am comparing desktop to desktop NOT desktop to online.

Based on your explanation shouldn’t this effect ALL desktop payroll, right? Because they should all use the same calculator. The rounding is only happening in 2 of my 15 payroll clients. The 13 clients it isn’t happening in have filled out their W-4s without additional withholdings. And this has only happened in these 2 recent files. I’ve used QuickBooks desktop payroll for 20 years (and I’m a ProAdvisor) and I’ve never seen this happen before.
