Payroll - how to update active tax year in Payroll Settings?

QB is not letting me run a payroll 5/4/26 - 11/4/26. It wants me to update my active tax year in Payroll Settings.

How do I do this? Is this because I am effectively needing a week 53?

Any help gratefully received!

Hi there, Ricardo67. The error occurs because you are attempting to process payroll for the 2026/27 tax year, while your QuickBooks settings remain locked to the 2025/26 tax year.

Regarding your Week 53 concern, an extra Week 53 payroll only occurs if your scheduled payday falls on April 5. If you pay employees weekly, bi-weekly, or every four weeks and your payday lands on that date, it will result in an additional pay run within that tax year. Therefore, you should not change the settings just yet, as this would be considered a Week 53 payroll run.

If you wish to manually change your tax year to 2026/27, you can do so by clicking on the Gear icon and selecting Payroll Settings. In the Active Tax Year section, click on the pencil icon to edit, and then tick the 2026/27 tax year.
