Question

We have repeated issues of FPS submissions hanging. When HMRC send a late filing notice we go back in and they file ok. Any ideas why they wont submit in the first place?

This happens in various clients on a regular monthly basis. We shouldn't have to be going back in to each one a few days later and resubmitting. Our user credentials are fine as they go through on the second attempt.

To help us narrow this down, have you encountered any specific error messages while submitting your FPS or when receiving a filing notice?

In the meantime, we can troubleshoot these FPS submissions in QuickBooks Online Payroll. Before you attempt to submit your next FPS, please ensure that you have:

  1. Completed the pay run: Double-check that the period is fully closed and finalized.
  2. Verified employee names: Ensure you are using only HMRC-accepted characters (avoid special characters or symbols).
  3. Checked addresses: Keep all address lines within the strict 35-character limit.
  4. Validated NI letters: Assign National Insurance (NI) category letters correctly based on age and gender.
