Question

Anyone else having an issue submitting their XML file to the CRA? Empty tags or missing mandatory tags?

When trying to send our XML file to the CRA, we are receiving an error message: We are unable to process your submission because the T619 electronic transmittal record contains either empty tags or missing mandatory tags. Shouldn't the XML file generated by QuickBooks provide a valid file? That's part of the reason we all use QuickBooks - to make things easier, not have to try to decipher code in a file. Thanks for any assistance!

Hi there, rclbr51. I understand the importance of T4 submissions to work smoothly, especially when using QuickBooks to simplify the process.

The error you've encountered is due to a mismatch between the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements for electronic filing and the information within your QuickBooks company settings.

To sort this out, you’ll need to update the Representative Identifier (RepID) field to ensure the XML file complies with CRA's requirements before resubmitting it.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Payroll Settings.
  2. Navigate to the Federal Tax section.
  3. Next to the Business Number Field, select View/Edit and complete the multi-factor authentication steps.
  4. In the Representative Identifier (RAC) field, enter your 7-digit alphanumeric RepID.
  5. Hit Save.

This step ensures all T4 XML files you generate in QuickBooks Online include the necessary RepID tag.
