Can QB remember the way I left a workspace window the last time I used it? Huge workflow efficiency problem for me; occurs in Pro 2012, Pro 2013, & Pro 2016.

I have to constantly resize a sub-window every time I use it. My "create invoices" window, for example always comes up smaller than its full, maximized size within the larger QuickBooks "frame." I have to resize it by clicking the maximize button every time. Is there some way I can make QuickBooks remember the way I left a workspace window the last time I used it? This has been an issue for as long as I can remember. It's a huge workflow efficiency problem for me. This occurs in every version of QB I have ever used - currently Pro 2012, Pro 2013, and Pro 2016.

Hi there Perrin,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

I'd be happy to help. You can change the settings of your Preferences, and toggle to Save Current desktop to remember the last window you had open. To view the full size of the window, change your settings to One Window.

Here's how:

  1. Click Edit from the top menu.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Choose Desktop View , then My Preferences tab.

I've attached a screenshot for a reference.

Reach out to me if you have questions. Thank you.

QB Desktop 2017 rearranges the work space every time I close and reopen.  I like three windows open - accounts, customers, and reminders.  I have saved the work space, saved last work space, and every combinations available under preferences.  It's the same every time.  Why will it not simply save the arrangement I prefer? This is a most annoying issue.

Enterprise 18: I have the same problem as Perrin since I started using QB years ago... I have tried every combination under "Desktop View" Preferences... it saves it and works several times, but once every week or two, it loses the settings.  Maybe it is occurring when my computer has to restart at night for updates, or when we connect to it remotely??  Either way, it should NEVER lose these settings... VERY ANNOYING... especially when we have to pay $2,500+ per year for a product.  If I knew which preference file or registry key these settings were saved in, I could copy it out to my desktop and overwrite them when it gets screwed up... this would be better than having to take 10 minutes out of my day to get the windows set back up the way I want them!
Oh, and I don't want to "View One Window"  -  I want to have multiple windows arranged the way I want them... is this the problem?  The "View Multiple Windows" option doesn't work properly?  If not, why?

"Maybe it is occurring when my computer has to restart at night for updates, "

You would not leave QB running all the time, though. When you change a Preference, that is saved in a .ini file (initialization).

"or when we connect to it remotely??"

Remotely doesn't mean you control everything about the Local computer. It depends on your connectivity tools, but the Preference setting and that .ini file is saved to the Local computer and for the Signed in User. So, sometimes, you are working in a connectivity that does not result in either a Saved .ini or an applied .ini.

Example:

Your local computer has the program and file, and you log in as Admin. I remote in and log in as User1. I do not get your screen settings. And I cannot Save them or change them or set mine, if the system cannot write a .ini file for me to that local computer. Remember that my computer doesn't even have to have QB installed, so there is no local .ini file for me.

"If I knew which preference file or registry key these settings were saved in"

Open that program. Use F2, then F3. Use the Open File tab. Here they all are.

"I could copy it out to my desktop and overwrite them when it gets screwed up..."

Be Careful. There is a lot more in .ini files than "I want this window on the left."

They way I got it to stick was...

Put in Hierarchial mode...Customize Columns... Add a variable to the columns....Save..

The mode stuck for me after this... Maybe someone else can verify?
