Company file restored from copied files off broken drive?

I'm trying to help a neighbor out with quickbooks. I'd rather not make a mistake so please bear with me as I explain the situation.

With that said, they had quickbooks desktop installed on a Mac through bootcamp running windows 10. Both operating systems decided to crap out. I spent most of today fiddling with both systems trying to find a path of least resistance. I got Mac up and running but windows will not load normally or in safe mode, it will not chkdsk /f. Would love to save and fix whatever is broken in windows but I'm running out of tricks. I'm thinking I might have to reinstall windows but I need to know:

I can access company files from the Mac side so I copied them over (C:Users/Public/Documents/Intuit/Quickbooks/). I don't think this counts as a backup so was wondering is there a way to restore from this data?

I appreciate your cooperation, Shuey. Considering how much you’ve tackled, I recommend contacting our Live Support team for expert guidance on restoring this company file.

It’s important to note that the QuickBooks File Doctor is incompatible with QuickBooks for Mac. This incompatibility is the reason you are encountering dead links and issues. The File Doctor tool is specifically designed for Windows versions of QuickBooks and cannot be utilized on macOS systems.

Since you have already performed the available troubleshooting steps, I encourage your neighbor to reach out to our Live Support team for further assistance. They have the specialized tools and expertise necessary to effectively restore the company file.

Here's how to connect with them:

  1. Inside QuickBooks Desktop, navigate to the Help menu.
  2. Choose the QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us option.
  3. Enter the question, keyword, or topic you need help with.
  4. Follow the prompts, then choose e away to connect with us.

I appreciate you helping your neighbor access their company file, theshuey79. I want to provide some useful advice on how to recover their data and address any Windows-related problems. Let’s proceed with this process together.

Since you can access QBDT MAC, I suggest reaching out to an IT specialist for Windows. They can offer expert guidance to identify and fix the Windows installation, ensuring everything is correctly configured for future usage.

You're also right that the duplicated file is not a backup since it is their company file (.qbw). To restore them, you can follow these steps:

  1. Start QuickBooks.
  2. Click on the File menu, then choose Open or Restore Company...
  3. Select Open a company file, then click Next.
  4. Follow the instructions provided on the screen.

Afterward, you can create a backup file and store it using a DMG file. This file will hold a copy of your company file along with any other documents you’ve saved in QuickBooks, such as forms or PDFs. For additional information on restoring company files, check out this article: Restore your file.

Moreover, here’s a resource to help them manage their business with QBDT for Mac: User Guide. It covers topics like banking, lists, getting paid, etc.

If you have any further questions about restoring your company file or have concerns related to QuickBooks, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'm here to further assist.

"You're also right that the duplicated file is not a backup since it is their company file (.qbw). To restore them, you can follow these steps:"

Prior to me getting it, the computer was crashing due to any free space being consumed by something -- (I was able to clear up 1 GB of space but in 10 minutes it was gone. Something consumed it which I think is either corruption of virus.) To my point, she tried to do a backup but it stated there wasn't;t enough room on HD. I'm wondering if the data I copied from the Users/Public/Documents/Intuit/QuickBooks/ directory contains the failed attempt or is the company files regardless of backups. I'm not sure where else the company files would be located.
