We can use the migration tool for a seamless QuickBooks Desktop reinstallation on your new hard drive, Trista. I’ll walk you through the steps to keep your business running smoothly.
To use this tool, please ensure that you are the company admin and that you are using QuickBooks Desktop 2018 or a newer version. This will enable you to transfer up to three company files to a different computer with ease.
Once done, please ensure your computer is connected to the internet and prepare a USB flash drive with enough free space to store your QuickBooks files.
Afterward, let's go ahead and follow the steps below in reinstalling your QuickBooks on your new hard drive.
Step 1: On your old computer
Navigate to the QuickBooks File menu, choose Utilities, and then select Move QuickBooks to another computer.
Click I'm Ready and create a one-time password.
Follow the on-screen instructions to select your USB flash drive and allow the files to be copied.
Step 2: On your new computer
Insert the USB flash drive. Please note that due to Windows security measures, the Migrator Tool will not automatically start up.
Manually open the flash drive to view its files and double-click the Move_QuickBooks.bat file to activate the Migrator Tool.
Input the password you previously created and click Let's Go.
Allow some time for the Migrator Tool to complete. The duration will depend on your computer’s speed, internet connection, and the size of your company file(s).
Moreover, if the migrator doesn't open after selecting and running the file, you have to ensure that you are using the latest version of the tool.
