Planning QuickBooks Desktop Updates

QuickBooks Desktop permits updates with manual and automated options, but there does not appear to be any way to know in advance of performing the update whether the update will require a restart of QuickBooks Desktop and/or a reboot of the computer.
Acknowledging that the operator is presented with the option of installing the update 'now' or 'later', this may work okay in a single-user environment, but is not practical in a multi-user setting.
Planning for restarts and reboots is essential in a multi-user (and Remote Desktop/Terminal Server) situation.
So, beyond selecting a 'now' or 'later' option, please consider including a pre-alert for any updates that will require restarting QuickBooks Desktop and/or rebooting the computer.
Just speculating, but my hunch is that there is a large percentage of QuickBooks Desktop customers that would appreciate the opportunity to plan ahead and schedule accordingly for system interruptions.

Hello, @bcars.

Thank you for your feedback. Your suggestions are what helps QuickBooks improve daily.

Updates for Quickbooks ensure that you always have the best performance possible. I suggest scheduling updates for times that work best for you, like before or after work. This way you can reboot the computers to successfully update the software.

I will send this feedback to our Development Team. You can send feedback as well,  go to the Help menu to submit feedback by selecting Send Feedback Online, then Product Suggestion. Our team reviews the suggestions and may consider them in a future update.

Thank you for responding.
However, the request is for knowing in advance of the update what the specific impact will be in regard to the need of a QuickBooks restart or a computer reboot.

Hello, @bcars.

There are three methods to update your QuickBooks software.  Let me share some information on how it works.

  • Automatic Update Method (default setting)
  • On-Deman Update (Immediate)
  • Release Download
  • Manual Update

When you turn on the automatic update option in your QuickBooks, you'll be prompted about it when you open QuickBooks. To share the updates in a multi-user environment, users must have access to the same directory in which updates are downloaded.

All users must complete the following steps to enable the sharing of downloaded updates:

  1. Open the shared data file (usually a company file).
  2. Go to the Help menu.
  3. Choose Update QuickBooks. The Update QuickBooks window opens.
  4. Click the Options tab.
  5. For the Shared Download option, click Yes.
  6. Click Save.

When the Share Download option is enabled, QuickBooks downloads updates to the location in which the shared company data file resides.
