Question

QB 2022 DB service breaks others and causing multi-user mode to stop working on all previous versions.

Hi,

We found a replicable issue when introducing QB 2022 (Premiere/Accountant) to our enviroment. As soon as we install Quickbooks 2022 DB service to our file servers (Windows Server 2016 - which is hosting QB files from 2016 up to 2021), multi-user mode stopped for all previous versions with the error code H202. Everything works again as soon as QB 2022 hosting is removed with no additional changes made. The same issue exists in multiple file servers, even with the new setup. Please help!!!

Thanks for checking in with us, ryannguyen.

We currently have an ongoing issue with multi-user errors after upgrading to QuickBooks Desktop 2022. This is caused by the missing Database Server Manager. Rest assured, our product engineers are working together on a permanent fix on this issue.

While we're still fixing this issue, we can try uninstalling the version installed on the server computer as a workaround. If the QuickBooks Server Manager version 2022 is nowhere to be found after uninstalling the prior version, just perform a manual clean install on QuickBooks 2022 to fix it.

To ensure you'll get an update about the resolution status, I'd suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. They'll pull up your account in a secure environment and add you to the list of affected users. This way, they can add your company to the list of affected users and provide this investigation number for easy tracking: INV-63789.

You may send a message via chat, call us at a time convenient to you, or we’ll get in touch with you instead. To ensure we address your concern, our representatives are available from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and 6:00 AM - 3:00 PM on Saturdays, PST. See our support hours and types for more details about this one.

To learn more about multi-user mode, here's an article you can refer to for more details about hosting your company data in multi-user mode in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you need to take care of other things in QuickBooks, I'm with you every step of the way. Just leave a comment below and I'll get back to you. Take care always.

Thanks for joining this thread, @jadem. Let me provide additional information to fix multi-user issues.

We had to uninstall the prior version installed on the server computer. If the QuickBooks version 2022 is nowhere to be found after uninstalling the prior version, perform a manual clean install on QB 2022 to fix it.

Let's make sure everything is installed and set up properly. If needed we may need to reinstall some components. Aside from that, ensure to use QuickBooks Desktop version 2022 R3 for the multi-user to work perfectly.

If the issue persists, I suggest contacting our support team to check your account. They have the tools to find the root cause of your concern and find a fix.

Moreover, let me share this article to help set up a multi-user network so computers on your network can access your company files: Multi-user setup.

Fill me in if you have further questions about this matter. I'll be around to provide additional input to resolve your concern. Stays safe!

If your QuickbooksDB32 service is running and QBCFMonitor service is running, but Multi User-mode does not work, Uninstalling the 2022 DBM from control panel and deleting the QuickBooksDM32service, restarting the DB31 service fixes the issue for now.

I noticed that the 2022 Data base manager installs by default into the windows directory C: Program Files directory V's all other versions install into the Program Files(x86).

Tonight I will attempt to install the 2022 database manager into the Program files(x86) Directory and see if that fixes the DBM32.

Is there a fix to this yet?

January 10, 2023

I had it do 2020 and 2022 both programs.  Can't work with Abort every two minutes.  Have worked with QUICK BOOKS for 40 years.  Never had these problems EVER!  Need an update that works for free or I'm heading somewhere else.  Carol   [email address removed]

To resolve the said issue about the multi-user errors, let's ensure to update the product to its latest release. The program will work with multi-user if you're using QuickBooks Desktop 2022 R3.

If the issue persists, I suggest contacting our support team to check your account further.

Here's how you can reach them:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Proceed to Help, then choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.

  3. Click Contact Us.

  4. Give a brief description of your issue.
  5. Choose Let's talk, and then select a way to connect with us.

Additionally, let me share this resource to help set up a multi-user network so computers on your network can access your company files: Multi-user setup.

So why does multi-user only work for 2022 program and not any previous versions of QuickBooks desktop?

I have tested this 9 ways to Friday now listen to your "Tech Support" breath in my ear with no answers on Multiple phone calls never being told that ONLY the 2022 version will work with the 2022 Data base manager.

The first glaring issue I see is that if you attempt to only install the 2022 data base manager DB32, it installs in 32bit even though its a 64 bit installer and It doesn't work at all for any version year.

Second, The new 2022 software is also 64 bit version where all previous versions were 32 bit.

In order to get the 64 bit Data base manager you have to install the whole GD program along with the data base manager in order to install the 64 bit Quick Books data base manager DB32 (64-bit).

After this the only version year that works to go into multi user mode is 2022. No previous versions will go into Multi user mode when the 64-bit DB32 Data base manager is installed.

This is absurd for CPA's trying to manage way more than one or two file from a file server. Useless space wasted on expensive server drives where the program will never be run. Its an OS drive for services and utilities...

You all keep labeling these questions as solved but they are not.

What are the technicians doing to provide an option to the 64 Bit problem? Nothing? Tough luck? sorry you paid so much for so little? Actually its more like take what we give you and like it.

What I am hearing from Intuit / QuickBooks is old software is no longer supported if you want to do anything with purpose in the 2022 version. Other wise best option is to encourage everyone to not update or upgrade to 2022 versions of your software so they can maintain full operational capability of version years 2021, 2020 and 2019 until 2019 is no longer supported in May 2022.

We also have constant problems with file sharing between the server and the workstation in multi-user in 2022.  It works one day and not the next. Freezes constantly, requiring reboot. We do have Desktop Pro Plus 2022 version R3P.

The error just says the workstation can't connect with the server because it doesn't have permission. Although the error message is not always the same.

We have been on with tech support over and over for upwards of 4 hours at a time since we upgraded to 2022 in Nov 2021. It works for a day or two then won't let us in again.

Any help would be great!!!

Did you ever get any sort of resolution on this issue? I am having a similar issue? Thank you.

I want to fix this from happening to you, @John_K.

Let's fix your multi-user issue in QuickBooks Desktop by doing some troubleshooting steps. This way, you can get back where you left off.

Have you tried updating, uninstalling, and reinstalling the product as suggested by my colleagues above? If you have not yet done so, I urge you to do so. Ensure your QuickBooks Desktop version is 2022 R3 for the multi-user to work perfectly. To check the version, press F2 on your account homepage.

If the issue persists after following the above solution, I recommend following the steps in this article regarding error code H202: How to fix Error H202 and H505.

Additionally, I've added this article that'll help you learn about the tasks that can be performed in single or multi-user mode: Features Available and Task you can Do With a Single or More Than One License.

Fill me in if you have additional questions about multi-user mode issues. I'm always here to help you. Keep safe, John.

Michelle -- I think the issue is occurring for me and others when there are multiple versions of QB installed -- which has always worked in the past. I tried re-install QB this AM, and then run the updates, but that did not seem to make a difference.

What is odd is that it does not show the QB DB manager for 2022 is even running (like it does for the other releases).

I have tried the Tools Hub and all that, and called Support -- and their "maybe" solution was to uninstall all the existing version of QB on the machine and re-install. And that just  doesn't seem like a solution to me.

Do a search for INV-63789 and you will see there are others that have a similar issue -- but no FIX that I can find has been posted.

I am pretty sure something is broken and Intuit needs to get their Engineering Team involved.

This is really starting to take up a lot of time.

April 26, 2022

Is problem Inv-63789 solved yet? We use QB desktop from 2016 -2022 and need to be able to use QB 2022 in multi-user mode. Payroll will no longer be supported in QB 2019 at the end of May so this needs to be addressed. We need to upgrade to QB2022 to do payroll but need to be able to use it in multi-user mode.

April 27, 2022

Short answer is no.

So don't listen to the help desk nitwit that only answered the first part of your question as they all seem to do for some dumb reason...

Multi-user mode doesn't work for any Previous years if 2022 Data Base Manager is installed and they don't seem serious to fix it, Just show me the money!!!!!

What they fixed in that investigation was the 64 bit Data Base Manager not installing originally. The installer would install a 32 bit DBM that didn't work for any versions including 2022 and ironically still exists in the installer package which is why they have to give such long detailed instructions on how to properly install it to make it function for 2022 only.

They wont even open a new case on this and it was like pulling teeth to get any of the QB tech guys to acknowledge that the issue exists.

Some of the other IT guys in this thread and my self have tested this 10 ways to Friday. No Go.

The only way to keep previous versions of the QB software's Multi-user mode functioning is to not install the 2022 Data base manager at all or uninstall it if its installed. This means all previous years will be able to open in Multi user mode but 2022 will not.

It would be nice to pay so much money for software and have it not kill other version of supposedly "Supported" software.... But that's Soooo 2010......

Hello, LKBowersox.

Thanks for chiming in, and I'll give some updates about the investigation case and ensure you'll be able to use the multi-user mode properly.

I checked the status of INV-63789 and I see that the Database Server Manager issue is already fixed.

The patch was rolled out in the recent update  for QuickBooks 2022. If you've already installed QuickBooks 2022, make sure to get the latest release. Then, run QuickBooks Database Server Manager and ensure all of your workstations are working.

If you're still getting the issue, we'll want to clean uninstall and reinstall QuickBooks Desktop. We can download the installer here (Pro Plus): https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products.

After downloading the installer, we'll want to run it as an admin and proceed with the installation steps.

If we haven't reinstalled it yet, we can get the Server Manager's latest version here: Install QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

Run the installer and open the Server Manager as an admin.

If you're still on the process of getting QuickBooks 2022, make sure to install the latest release updates when prompted.

After upgrading to QuickBooks 2022 with the payroll module, do you need to check your employees' data? We can run a summary report to do this. Let's use this article as our guide: Create a payroll summary report.

Don't forget to visit the Community space again if you have questions regarding the features in QuickBooks 2022. If you have questions regarding your payroll service, let me know the details and I'll gladly help you out.

April 27, 2022

If anyone tries this and it actually works would you KINDLY post here. I don't think the help desk people actually understand the issue.

We can get the new version to work following their instructions but when we do, the old versions DO NOT WORK in multi user mode.

So, if any one uses their instructions and it actually begins to work please kindly let us now.

To the other independent IT guys/Gals in this thread:

I just Noticed that a new revision came out for 2022 versions of the software.

R4 is released, but I wont have time to test and see if Multi User mode functionality for older versions has been fixed in this release until next week.

Let us know if you have a chance to test and your results please.

Thanks.

May 2, 2022

Unfortunately, I am unable to test this either at the moment. I just got the one client up and running smoothly with a Virtual Machine setup as the QB 2022 DB Server while their current server is running all the previous years. I cannot risk taking them down again to test an issue that QB should publicly come out and say if it fixes the issue or not. Luckily we haven't had any other CPA client upgrade to 2022 but if they do i will give this a test and let you know.

Thank you!

May 2, 2022

bobby,

Is this VM with 2022 DBM on the same network as the other older DBM hosts?

Would be interested in hearing details.

I will try beginning of next week with this new revision and see if it fixes it or if I have to go the same rout and create a new 64Bit DBM host.

Step 1: Use QuickBooks Database Server Manager
As the first step, start by opening QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the server computer
Go to the Start menu and type ‘Database.’
If no folder location is found, use the Browse option to go to the folder that stores the company file(s).
Now, press the OK button. Follow it by clicking the Scan button.
If the above-given steps are followed word to word, the firewall permissions will get repaired.

Now, the user needs to check whether the multi-user mode not working problem has resolved or not. If not, users should follow the next step.

Step 2: Check Host Mode on each of the User Computers
Now, open the QuickBooks File menu on the user computer, followed by opening utilities.
Note that if Host Multi-User Access appears on the list, the user needs to move to the next computer. This simply denotes that the particular computer is not the system hosting the company file.
If Stop Hosting Multi-User Access appears on the list, one has to disable hosting, followed by enabling QuickBooks single user mode.
Once it is ensured that hosting mode is off on all the user computers, one should scan for the QuickBooks multi user mode not working error.

Step 3: Check whether QuickBooks services are running
Make sure that Quickbooks DBXX (here XX is representing the year of QuickBooks) and QBCF Monitor Service is in running state on the server computer. To use the multi-user mode of QuickBooks services, follow the below pointers.

1. Initiate the first step by typing ‘services.msc’ in the windows search bar. Move ahead and press the Enter key.
2. Look out for QuickBooks DBXX service to appear in the Services window. If this does not appear, then follow these given steps –

Make sure that the database server manager is installed on the server properly
Look out for the corresponding, up-to-date Database Server Manager. As every year after the installation of QuickBooks Desktop on the user’s computer, the Manager also gets an upgrade.
In case, the entire program is running on the computer, one needs to ensure that hosting is enabled on the server.
3. The next step should involve double-clicking the QuickBooks DBXX service. Once the service gets started, it should show either Running or Start option.
4. In the following step, select ‘Restart the QuickBooksDBXX Service’ for the first, second and subsequent failures under the Recovery tab.
5. Simply repeat the points 1,2,3, and 4 as mentioned above for the QBCF Monitor Service.

Having followed all the aforesaid steps, the user requires to open QuickBooks in multi-user mode on each of the work computers. This is to check if the ‘QuickBooks multi user mode not working’ issue has been resolved or not.

If the problem persists and the error message appears, the user needs to check the membership of QuickBooks DBXX service. The membership service should have all the required permissions and it should be a part of the administrator group.

So....

Great step by step for trouble shooting Data base managers.... but a little useless as it pertains to mixing 32bit and 64 bit data base managers on the same host or server.  (Read the other 2 pages for reference of the issue)

Since you obviously host VM's for a desktop experience and the use of QB versions, have you found some other way to mix a 32 bit data base manager and the 64 bit data base manager and maintain functionality of multi user mode for versions 2022 through 2020 all installed on the same host with out loosing multi user functionality for the 2021  through 2020 or even older versions once 2022 is properly installed and the 2022 data base manager is functioning normally?

We have all found that 2022 breaks Multi user functionality for versions 2021 and older once the 2022 data base manager is installed but 2022 multi user mode functions fine.

What are your findings?

July 4, 2022

I have the same issue and I installed the R4 version of Quickbooks 2022

It seems Quickbooks 2022 is 64 bit and installs to C:\Program Files folder where all previous versions are 32 bit and install to the C:\Program Files (x86) folder.

-- So if you are having issues with Multi-User Mode for Quickbooks Desktop 2022 and get the H202 error you have to use the 64bit "QuickBooks Database Server Manager" to run a scan to fix Windows firewall issues:

"C:\Program Files\CommonFiles\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBServerUtilityMgr.exe"

-- With earlier versions of Quickbooks that are installed on the same server you use the 32bit  "QuickBooks Database Server Manager":

"C\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBServerUtilityMgr.exe"

*** To know you have the proper version of QBServerUtilityMgr.exe running for Quickbooks 2022 go to the "Port Monitor" tab and you will see all your versions of Quickbooks that you have installed as well as the ports they are using.  If Quickbooks Database Manager 2022 is not listed there then you are using the older 32 bit version for all previous versions of Quickbooks from 2021 down.

I hope this works for you,

Ben Perry
