QB2021 Crashes When Recording a Journal Entry

I updated my QB2021 to the newest release this morning. R11-10.  Now when I enter a journal entry, QB give me a message that it must abort.  Then it shuts down.  Others in my office are having the same problem.  It only happens in QB2021.  All other versions are working o.k.  This just started with the latest release.  Is anyone else having this problem?

Hello @JoyceM8385,

Thank you for providing a detailed post about the issue. I'm here to assist you with your concern about the crashing problem when recording a journal entry in QuickBooks Desktop.

I've checked, and there's no reported issue similar to what you've encountered using the 2021 version. For now, I recommend you perform some troubleshooting steps to isolate and figure out the problem.

You can start by running the Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tool Hub. It fixes common errors and unusual behaviors like the one you're having on your end.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  6. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, select Program Problems.
  7. Select Quick Fix my Program.

If the issue persists, let's perform additional troubleshooting steps in QuickBooks. Please visit this link and follow the remaining solutions to get back on track: Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working.

In case all else fails, please reach our support team by requesting a callback. Our support can investigate the issue further and perform the necessary actions to help.

Our Customer Support Team for the Pro, Plus, and Premier is available from 6 AM - 6 PM PT (Monday - Friday). For Enterprise, any time, any day.

See the steps to get a hold of a specialist:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Click the Help tab at the top menu bar.
  3. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  4. Enter your concern, then hit Continue.
  5. Choose Get a callback.

Also, I want to share an article you can visit to know more about QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation. Check this out: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy.

Feel free to hit that Reply button if you need more assistance fixing the program. I'll keep an eye on your thread. Have a great day.

I spoke with a support person.  QB will crash when you enter any transaction - deposit, check, journal entry.  It is only happening with accountant's copy files.  After spending over an hour on the phone, he is now researching the problem and will call me back.

Any update on this issue?

November 29, 2022

I am having same problem with QB 2021.

I have spent over with 2 hours with support with no success in fixing this problem.

They keep trying to load updates and moving file to different location.

It must be the update that is causing this problem as other users are having same problem.

We're seeing this on multiple computers too since 2021 R11. I tested specifically on one computer that had not been turned on since Thanksgiving and was still on R10. I entered journal entries fine. I let it install the R11 update, and now journal entries crash with Code: 19062 00238. When will you release R12 to fix this?

Let's resolve the error you've encountered so you can enter journal entries seamlessly, @AaronPriest.

The code 19062 00238 is an unrecoverable error that happens when importing an accountant’s changes into a client’s company file. To fix this, you can follow the steps below:

To begin, make sure to restore a recent backup or the backup created when importing the accountant's changes. This will let you restore the accounting data before you run into this error.

Then run a Verify and Rebuild data tool on the client's file. The Verify Data will identify any data issues within your company file. Then, the Rebuild tool will self-resolve it.

Here's how:

  1. Select File, then Utilities, and choose Verify Data.
  2. If it detects an error, proceed in rebuilding your data.
  3. Go back to the File menu and then Utilities and select Rebuild Data.
  4. Choose OK. If you’ll receive a message, back up your company file.
  5. After creating the backup file, the Rebuild Data utility will run automatically.
  6. Click OK when you get the message Rebuild has completed.

Once done, ensure to update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. This process can help fix known issues, add features and enhancements.

Regarding R12, it will be announced when the new update is released.

Additionally, I'll be sharing these articles you can utilize in the future to manage Accountant's copy in QuickBooks:

I'm always here if you need further guidance in creating a journal entry in QuickBooks. I'll be around to help always. Keep safe!

No Intuit, you are NOT listening. Journal entries work fine on R10, it doesn't work on R11. YOU are the problem. Not our computers, not our company files, not us professionals using the apps we use every day. YOU need to fix YOUR problem so we can use a product we purchased. As I already mentioned, we already updated to your latest release and THAT is what broke this, so your advice is flat out wrong. Fix it! We already have been waiting since May / June for problems you introduced with your bundled web browser in 2022 R5 and 2021 R10. Our patience has run out.

December 8, 2022

We fixed it ourselves. QB 2021 and 2022 both started having trouble with journal entries on accountant copies after installing the latest update for each year, 2021 R11 and 2022 R6, on every QuickBooks file for every client. It clearly was not a problem with the client files. We updated QB2023 to R3 today (no clients are using it yet, so it hadn't been opened since installing a month or two ago), and now journal entries work fine in 2021 and 2022. Updates for a specific year of QuickBooks should not affect other years like this, but it frequently does. Intuit says you need a different computer for every year of QuickBooks, but that would mean 8 or more laptops per employee and that's just not going to happen. Nor is every client going to always run the same year of QuickBooks, even with Intuit forcing everyone to a subscription or QuickBooks Online. You really should test inter-operability between your products with updates to avoid this grief for tax professionals.

Thank you!!

Installing QB Enterprise 2023, and running all updates fixed the issue with the Accountant's copy crashing while working in QB Enterprise 2021.

December 9, 2022

Our client is having the exact same issue in QB Accountant 2021 with Accountant copies. They noticed it starting a few weeks ago which lines up with the updates. The client took the file home and tried it on his home office machine which had no issue as it was not updated to the latest release like the machines in the office have. This is happening to every machine that gets the update.

Same thing happening here.  I'm using Pro Plus 2023 and get the abort program alert.

January 24, 2023

Just adding to the conversation here. It has been going on since November and there are several CPA's working with Accountant Copies that still cannot save Journal Entries. This is the single most important feature for an Accountant to work with their customers. Intuit has failed to release an update to address this problem yet.  I have over 40 clients that are affected by this issue alone. Intuit, we need a patch to fix this as soon as possible please! There have been two update cycles since then and no bug fix! It is a well-known issue. I'm begging you!

January 25, 2023

On several customer's computers I had to uninstall the last three years and reinstall them with the latest installer for each year in the order of each year. It appears that the latest 2023 patch fixes 2021, but not if 2021 was updated after 2023 was updated. If that happens, then both have to be uninstalled and reinstalled in the correct order. Since 2022 was also affected for some, I just did all three in sequence and it seems to fix it. A colossal expense of IT hours when there are many computers for many customers affected. Intuit's response was to only run one year of QuickBooks per computer. That's out of touch with reality though.

The crash may be QuickBooks trying to put up pesky advertisements to "help" you.

If to, then for US versions of QuickBooks at least, try this:

How to Stop QuickBooks Desktop Advertisements & Crashes

January 27, 2023

We've got 3 members of our firm that have already tried posting in accountant's copies that have .exe fatal errors reported that shut down the program immediately.

This is 100% a QB issue and I'm shocked it's gone on this long (reading this thread) without a fix.

Anybody heard from Intuit yet!?

I'm happy to report that Austin's suggestion of installing the newer version of QB 2023, and updating all of my prior versions before I opened my 2023 QB was the solution; for me anyway. I ended up installing 2023, then opening the QB 2022 and installing all the updates, 2021 installing the updates, and then 2020, and that seemed to do the trick.

I've since logged back into my accountants copy I was working out of and it seems have done the trick, at least in the 2020 QB accountants copy I'm working out of.

Thanks.
