Digital Filing of Annual Accounts with Companies House

Dear Forum Members,

We received a letter from Companies House UK advising that "From 1 April 2027, all companies will need to file their annual accounts using commercial software", i.e. software filing.

It surprised us to see that QuickBooks Online is not (yet?) listed as suitable accountancy package for software filing:
https://www.gov.uk/software-company-accounts

I believe that all users of QBO deserve a statement from QBO with regards to:
- whether QBO will become accredited by Companies House for software filing

- what the time time / dates are for this accreditation, i.e. will it be in time for the deadline set by Companies House

Has anybody heard anything on this from QuickBooks?
Many thanks for your help.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) has not yet been recognized as the software provider for filling directly to Companies House, Pairfum.

As of now, there is no specific timeline or estimated date for QBO for the accreditation. However, QuickBooks is committed to providing our customers with seamless accounting solutions, and we are exploring alternative ways to support your account filing needs once the service ends. I suggest consulting with an accountant that can assist you in ensuring that your filings remain compliant or using another third-party app who can manage to file on your behalf.

To keep your VAT information in QuickBooks current, here's how to manually record your VAT payment or refund so that your VAT payable balance is zero.

Dear @NerbynMaeI

Many thanks for your reply and update.

It is very disappointing and surprising to hear that there is no timeline on when QBO will be accredited as a software provider for filing annual accounts directly to Companies House.

It does surprise us to see that Xero, Sage and many other have already been accredited by comparison.

We hope that Intuit continues to be committed to QBO in the UK and that a solution will be in place soon.

With kind regards,

I have tried using the QB help facility several times but nobody seems to be taking this issue seriously.  It is high time that QuickBooks issued a statement to clarify the position so that if we need to use a different software package we have time to make the necessary changes before our filing deadline.

Hi

Has there been any update on this?  Or is there an app that could be used?

As Companies House have moved the start date to 01/04/2028, we need to know if we need to migrate to a new product

Thank you

You do not need to migrate your data to a new accounting software to meet the upcoming mandate.  While a standard business subscription of QuickBooks Online does not currently include a native feature for direct self-filing to Companies House, you can manage the 2028 digital requirement right from your existing account using one of two methods.

First, if you work with a professional accountant, they can access your books using QuickBooks Online Accountant. This specialized platform includes integrated Workpapers and Pro Tax features, which fully support preparing and submitting annual accounts digitally to Companies House on your behalf.

Second, if you prefer to submit your filings independently, you can explore the QuickBooks App Store. There are verified, accredited third-party applications available that link directly with your current bookkeeping data to format and transmit your filings to Companies House.

Please don't hesitate to reply below if you still have any other questions or concerns.

Thank you!  That is a relief!

Dear Michaela,

Many thanks for the update.

However, to me these two solutions sound like 'workarounds' that might be suitable as a stop-gap.

Using QBO should enable us to directly self-file the accounts with Companies House and the P&L plus BS with HMRC.

I do believe we are entitled to expect more from QBO than the workaround solutions you outline.
