Question

I have Quickbooks self-employed (sole trader). Will this allow me to submit my MTD returns each quarter to HMRC myself (without using an accountant)? If not, which will?

I will need to complete MTD returns from April 2026 and I do my own accounts and not the use of an accountant. If QB cannot provide this I will have to consider switching to another provider, sadly.

There are several options you can choose from so you'll be able to submit taxes, Simon.

First, are you using QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) or QuickBooks Sole Trader? If you are currently using QBSE, you will not be able to submit Making Tax Digital (MTD) returns, as this program is designed for freelancers and offers basic tools for tracking income and expenses.

On the other hand, the Sole Trader program can manage taxes or VAT returns. You can follow the steps below to submit your tax return using this program:

  1. Navigate the Taxes.
  2. Click on VAT.
  3. Fill up the important details needed.
  4. Then select Set up MTD.

See these resources for more information and guidance:

Also, check out this article for guidance on filing and recording VAT payments to keep your VAT payable up to date: File your VAT return and record VAT payments in QuickBooks.

Please let us know if you have additional concerns in submitting MTD returns, we're always here to assist you.
