If you're a sole trader and your income is over £50,000, you can set up Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax through the Income Tax page. Ensure to click on Join MTD for Income Tax, authorize the connection, select your income source, and verify your obligations.

Before you get started, there are a few things you'll need to prepare:

  1. If you’ve never filed a tax return before, register with HMRC.
  2. Once you’re registered, head to the HMRC sign-up page to enroll in MTD for Income Tax.
  3. Under Account and Settings, go to the Advanced section and make sure you’ve set your business type to either Sole Trader or Landlord.

Once you've completed these steps, you’re ready to join MTD for Income Tax. To do this:

  1. Go to All apps on the left menu.
  2. Then, you can either  select View your Income Tax Estimate or click on Join MTD for Income Tax.
