Question

I am trying to process a customer refund. The help file is outdated. It says on the invoice I should click on "more", then "refund", but it's not there. How do I do it?

Hi there, Mitch. I appreciate the effort you've put in by following the steps in the help file to process a customer refund, even though the process didn't work.

To process a refund in QuickBooks Online, you'll need to create an adjustment note, then create a cheque to refund the deposit.

Here's how:

  1. Hover the +Create button, then select Adjustment note.
  2. Select the name of the Customer on your invoice.
  3. Enter the total of the invoice, including the deposit, in the Amount field.
  4. Select Save and close.

Once the adjustment note is created. The next step is to issue a cheque to refund the deposit.

Here's how:

  1. Hover the +Create, then select Cheque.
  2. Select the customer in the Payee field.
  3. Under Category details, in the Category dropdown, select Accounts Receivable.
  4. Enter the amount of the deposit received in the Amount field.
  5. Select Save and close.

For the last step, you may refer to this article for detailed guidance in recording the payment.
