Hi - can you convert an estimate automatically to an invoice or must I type over the invoice from inception when I have to prepare it for the customer ?

As of the moment, there isn't an integrated way to let the system automatically create the invoice from an estimate. This is because you'll be asked how much you'll have to invoice the customer base on the amount or number of items they've confirmed on the estimate.
