To properly identify if you should change your company from a sole trader to a limited company, and how you should go about doing it, I'd recommend working with an accounting professional.

If you're in need of one, there's an awesome tool on our website called Find a ProAdvisor. All ProAdvisors listed there are QuickBooks-certified and able to provide helpful insights for driving your business's success.

Once you're following your accountant's advice on if you should, and how you should go about doing it, there's two different methods they might recommend.

Here's how to update the settings in an existing company account:

  1. Use your Gear icon, then go to Account and settings.
  2. Access the Company tab.
  3. Go to Company Type or Tax info sections, and click the Pencil (Edit) icon.
  4. Change your company to the appropriate type.
  5. Select Save, then Done.

You may still need to manually edit your chart of accounts or create new registers to reflect the new structure.

If your accountant advises you need a completely fresh start, you can start a brand new company:

  1. Sign up for a new QuickBooks Online company.
  2. To move data from the old one to the new one, use your Gear icon, go to your TOOLS column, then Export Data in the old account.
  3. Choose what you want to export.
  4. Access your new company, go to the Gear icon, then select Import Data and upload the files.

I've also included a detailed resource about working with QuickBooks which you may find useful moving forward: Getting Started with QuickBooks

If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a wonderful Thursday!
