I am setting up an item as a non-inventory item to record bad debts, however what do I do when there is no box to select that you are selling this item to a customer?

I understand that a credit memo needs to be created for processing of bad debts, but with no box to select about selling to a customer, then there is no product/service that shows up when creating the credit memo.
