Question

Hello, I have a stale chq in the prior accounting period, is there an option for clearing a stale cheque in quickbooks or do manual journals need to be processed?

The proper way to handle stale-dated checks is to create deposits dated in the current period to offset them. Before proceeding with the steps below, it’s recommended to consult your accountant, Sabrina.

  1. Click the + Create button in the upper-left corner of the Dashboard page.
  2. Select Bank deposit and choose the affected bank in the Account field.
  3. Set the deposit date to the current period.
  4. In the Add funds to this deposit section, enter the following details:
ACCOUNT: Use the same account/category assigned to the stale-dated check.
AMOUNT: Enter the same amount as the check to offset it.
  5. Click Save and close.

Once completed, clear the deposit against the stale-dated check during your next reconciliation.

For additional information on stale-dated checks, you can review this article: What are stale-dated checks? And what you do with one.

Additionally, I recommend consulting your accountant for alternative solutions that ensure your accounts remain accurate when offsetting stale-dated checks.
