Update from qb5.0 to modern standard

The issue you’re experiencing is due to your version of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) being outdated. Typically, QuickBooks files need to be updated sequentially to avoid compatibility issues.

To resolve this, I recommend upgrading to an intermediate version, such as QuickBooks 2004 (or lower), which is closer in compatibility to QB 5.0 (1999).

Once updated through the intermediate version, proceed with restoring your file in QuickBooks 2006. 

As for the file update issue, where it gets stuck on "updating monitored transactions" and then triggers a 6025 runtime error, I suggest using the QuickBooks File Doctor tool to scan for and repair any potential company file damage.

Do they still have the installation files for version 5.0?

That advice is partly right but a bit oversimplified. With something as old as QB 5.0 (1999), you usually can’t jump straight to 2006 you need step-by-step upgrades through intermediate versions (like 2002/2003 → 2006, etc.), opening and verifying the file at each stage. The updating monitored transactions freeze and 6025 error are more likely conversion failures than something File Doctor can fix, since that tool isn’t very useful for legacy formats. Best approach is to work on a copy, use multiple older versions to migrate the file forward gradually, and rebuild at each step. If the file keeps failing even in intermediate versions, it may have underlying corruption, and some users try repairing a copy just to get it stable enough to convert third party tools like Stellar Repair for QuickBooks can sometimes help in those edge cases, but success depends on how damaged the file is.
