Company file will NOT open
I have been using QuickBooks Pro Desktop since 2012, and currently I’m using QuickBooks 2024 Pro Desktop for the past 8-12 months with no issues in my setup, until this week. I have always used the program in a Parallels virtual machine environment on Macs, and lately on 3 Macs, all running Windows 11. All of these Macs are laptops, and two of them are Apple Silicon Macs, M1 and M4, and the 3rd one is an Intel Mac from 2019. I had been keeping my company file on Dropbox, being very careful not to open it simultaneously on more than one of the Macs. This system had been working flawlessly for all of these years. I do not have multi-use sharing enabled. I haven’t needed it since I only access the company file from one Mac at a time, mostly now from the M4.
Last week, the main Mac, the M4, would not open my company file. The program would launch, but all I saw was a gray screen and a spinning blue circle, ad nauseam. Most of the time, nothing past this would occur. Occasionally, I’d get a message telling me the server could not be reached. That was curious since I don’t have hosting enabled.
Thinking Dropbox was the issue, suddenly, I moved the company file via a backup restore from within QB to the Documents folder in my User folder of the virtual machine. That seemed to work for a couple of sessions, and then I got the same gray screen issue. I am no longer keeping the file on Dropbox.
Everything is up-to-date across the board for Windows 11, Parallels, and QB. I have run the latest version of QB File Doctor, QB Tool Hub, no help whatsoever, and even gone so far as to uninstall and reinstall QB, and I have done that several times. Each time, I was able to restore my company file from the latest backup, open it, add some transactions, back it up, and exit the application. No problem. Until I tried opening the company file again. Then the same scenario. The company file would not open.
I then tried opening the file on the M1 Mac, after transferring it from within a QB backup and restore to the Documents folder, and I got the same issue. So I went to the Intel Mac, this time I transferred via a portable file copy, and the file opened normally, and still does, at least for the past few days. So far so good.
I tried one more uninstall / reinstall on the M4 Mac, but this time I chose to enable Hosting when starting the installation. Same issue; the company file won’t open.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.
