I had to install Quick Books on a new computer - old one crashed.  Updated QB after the install.  Go to open company file, but QB says that the file was created on a newer version...please update QB.

I've got the steps to help you access your company file in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) on your computer.

First, make sure your QBDT is updated to the latest release. Next, ensure that the file you're trying to open is a company file (.QBW). Other file types, such as backups (.QBB) and portable files (.QBM), cannot be opened in the same way. Also, verify that your file isn't compressed or encrypted.

Here's how:

  1. Right-click the company file and select Properties.
  2. Select Advanced.
  3. Clear the Compress and Encrypt checkboxes.
  4. Select OK.

If you still can't open your company file, continue to Solution 2 in this article: Can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

Feel free to return to this thread if you have more questions.

@AlanAA

What QB Desktop year version do you have?
