I can't find the menu option to modify invoice nmbrs, either in the invoice or in settings. I see the custom invoice numbers but that doesn't seem to change anything.

Turning on Custom Transaction Numbers in Settings makes the field visible and editable on the invoice itself, but it doesn’t automatically reset the sequence for you. You need to teach QBO the sequence manually.

First, we must make sure the invoice number field is actually editable.
 

Here's how:
 

1. Click the Gear icon ⚙️ and select Account and Settings.
2. Go to the Sales tab on the left.
   
    

   

3. In the Sales form content section, click the pencil icon.
4. Enable Custom transaction numbers.
   
    

   

5. Click Save and then Done.

Once done, proceed to teaching your QBO. 

Here's how:
 

1. Go to All apps, select Sales & Get paid, then choose Invoices.
2. Open the most recent one that has the unwanted prefix.
   
    

   

3. In the Invoice no. field (top right), delete the prefix and the number. Type in the exact number you want that to be. For example, if you want to be at 1005, type 1005.
   
    

   

    

4. Click Save and New or Save & Close.
5. After that, you will receive a prompt; select Yes to continue.
   
    

   

    

6. Then, test the sequence. Create a new, blank invoice.
7. QBO should now look at the last saved number (1005) and automatically suggest the next one (1006) without the prefix.
    

If the prefix is still showing, delete it again on the new invoice and save it. QBO learns after one or two manual corrections.

Lastly, lock it Back Down:

1. Proceed back to the Gear icon, then select Sales, and turn off the Custom transaction numbers.
   
    

   

    

2. It hides the field to prevent accidental changes, but QBO continues counting upward from your last number in the background.

Note that the Settings toggle only makes the Invoice No. Editable; it does not allow for setting a starting number. QBO assigns numbers based on your highest previous invoices.
