Ensure you're not accidentally creating a duplicate new customer instead of editing an existing one, Nash.

It seems like you're encountering a duplicate name error. If these are similar customer profiles, consider merging them by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the Customers, then Customer Center.
  2. Select Customers & Jobs.
  3. Right-click to show the edit.
  4. Select Edit Customer:Job.
  5. Hit Ok.
  6. The message will appear, "This name is already being used. Would you like to merge them?" Click Yes.

On the other hand, if they are different persons, add a unique character to the name, like a middle initial, suffix, or number when editing.

Alternatively, you can only delete customer profiles with no associated transactions. If they have existing ones, mark the customer as Inactive to remove them from the list. I'll show you how:

  1. Go to the Customers menu, then Customer Center.
  2. Select Customers & Jobs.
  3. Locate the customer you want to delete.
  4. Right-click the customer and choose Make Customer: Job Inactive or Delete Customer:Job.

On top of that, you can create customer groups based on location, type, or status in QuickBooks Desktop.
