Allow me to share some information on creating a journal entry accurately in QuickBooks Online (QBO), szthatsme.

The double-entry accounting method in QuickBooks requires that each transaction has both a debit and credit amount associated with it, and these amounts must be balanced when summed up in the journal. If you've entered the amount on the first line as debit, then you must balance the amount on the second line as a credit.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the + New icon.
  2. Select Journal entry.
  3. Start by selecting an account from the ACCOUNT field. Then, depending on whether you need to DEBIT or CREDIT the account, enter the amount in the corresponding column.
  4. On the next line, select the other account and enter the same amount in the opposite column.
  5. Double-check that the CREDIT and DEBIT columns have matching amounts to ensure account balance.
  6. Make sure to include a brief description in the Memo section of the journal entry.
  7. Click on Save and new or Save and close.

For complete guidance on recording journal entries, you can refer to this article: Create journal entries in QuickBooks Online.

In the meantime, If your DEBITS and CREDITS are already balanced when creating a journal entry, then let's check if it's a browser-related issue. We can start by opening your account in a private window as it ignores historical data.

These are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Mozilla Firefox: CTRL + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If you're able to create a journal entry after accessing a private window, then it's safe to say it's being caused by your browser. You'll want to clear your regular browser's cache.

Furthermore, you can check out this article to learn how to reverse an entry to update and correct it, or you can delete it if you created the entry by mistake in QBO: Reverse or delete a journal entry in QuickBooks Online.

Feel free to click reply if you have further questions regarding journal entries or any QuickBooks-related concerns. We're here to help. Keep safe.
