my chart of accounts sorts properly but my general ledger has a bank account showing in the middle of expenses and not with other bank accounts. All detail type checking

While the Detail Type: Checking is important, what really dictates where the account appears in the General Ledger is the Account Type, @apcasa.

I recommend checking the Account type of your accounts. Bank accounts should have the Account Type set to Bank. If it is set correctly to bank, you can log out, then log back in to refresh your QuickBooks Online account, then sort the General Ledger.
