Question

QuickBooks Cashdrawer

Hie,

I'd like to ask if there's an option on QuickBooks for adding money on QuickBooks besides through sales. For example, I have $50 cash in my pocket, then I want to record it in QuickBooks directly as $50, such that if I use $25 to buy some sweets, I have to go to the cashdrawer and add a bill that I spent $25 and then remains $25 in the cash drawer. In other words, all I'm talking about is adding my personal money directly into QuickBooks besides sales, is there such an option, or QuickBooks is only for sales and business?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, there's an option to add personal money directly into QuickBooks, Nigh.

To start, please note that QuickBooks is designed for tracking business records. Mixing business and personal expense is generally not recommended, as it may mess up your books and leads to confusion when tax preparation.

However, if you need to record your personal money, you can do so by creating a new account in the Chart of Accounts. Here's how:

  1. Open your QuickBooks Desktop account.
  2. Go to the List menu and click Chart of Accounts.
  3. In the bottom, select Account and choose New.
  4. Pick the account type base on your preferences and enter the account name as Personal Money.
  5. Once done, Save and Close.

Please see the screenshot for reference:

Once the account is created, you can record and track your personal money by clicking on the account you created earlier.

Alternatively, I recommended consulting your accountant to ensure your records are accurate. If you don't have one, you can use our Find-an-Accountant tool to look for an expert near you.
