Clicking Save when adding a new account to the Chart of Accounts would complete the addition, @bandarinvestments. If you're unable to create it without errors, we can perform some troubleshooting.

Can you elaborate on your concern regarding the account? Are you creating a sample account and don't want to save it? Please share more details so I can offer a more suitable solution.

On the other hand, if you're referring to the inability to save the account without errors, I recommend clearing the cache and cookies to fix issues with your regular browser. You can also try switching to another compatible option to verify if it's a webpage issue.

It's also worth noting that you can make an account inactive on your chart of accounts to organize them. It gives you access to past transaction data for reporting purposes.

Once set, refer to this article to review the accounts and match them to your bank and credit card statements: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

Lastly, consider speaking with our QuickBooks Live Expert for more personalized assistance if you need help setting up accounts and ensuring transactions are categorized correctly.

Please comment below if you need assistance managing COA. Any additional questions about something else are also welcome. I'll be here to provide more resources.

Thank you for the reply. A : in the account name impacted the add of account.

I wish the system could explain why it is not adding the account.

Adding colons (:) in account names within the Chart of Accounts (COA) is an interesting idea, Siva. However, this option is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

QBO restricts the use of colons in account names because they're a reserved character to define the parent and sub-accounts. Using colons in regular account names could disrupt the system’s ability to correctly interpret account hierarchies.

Below is a list of characters that are accepted in QBO:

  • Alpha-numeric: A-Z, a-z, 0-9
  • Comma: ,
  • Dot or period: .
  • Question mark: ?
  • At symbol: @
  • Ampersand: &
  • Exclamation point: !
  • Number/pound sign: #
  • Single quote: '
  • Tilde: ~
  • Asterisk: *
  • Space: ( )
  • Underscore: _
  • Minus sign/hyphen: -
  • Semi-colon: ;
  • Plus sign: +

For more details about accepted characters, you can check this guide: Acceptable characters in QBO.
