Error 591 means one of two things: your American Express Business account is already connected to a different QuickBooks company, or the connection process started but didn't finish. Here's how to fix each case.
If the account is already connected to another QuickBooks company
American Express accounts can only be linked to one QuickBooks company at a time.
- Open the QuickBooks company the account is currently connected to.
- Disconnect the American Express Business account.
- Open the QuickBooks company you want to connect the account to.
- Connect your American Express Business account there.
If the connection didn't finish setting up
If you started connecting your American Express Business account but the process got interrupted, disconnect it on American Express's side first, then reconnect it in QuickBooks.
- Go to the American Express website and sign in.
- Select the Account Services tab.
- Select Security & Privacy.
- Select Manage Partner Permissions, then select Intuit to expand the section.
- Select Disconnect to stop the connection.
- Go back to QuickBooks Online and connect the account again.
Once you're connected, you're all set to start categorizing and matching your American Express transactions in QuickBooks.
Let us know how it goes, or if you're still seeing the error after trying both of these.
