Error 591 means one of two things: your American Express Business account is already connected to a different QuickBooks company, or the connection process started but didn't finish. Here's how to fix each case.

If the account is already connected to another QuickBooks company

American Express accounts can only be linked to one QuickBooks company at a time.

  1. Open the QuickBooks company the account is currently connected to.
  2. Disconnect the American Express Business account.
  3. Open the QuickBooks company you want to connect the account to.
  4. Connect your American Express Business account there.

If the connection didn't finish setting up

If you started connecting your American Express Business account but the process got interrupted, disconnect it on American Express's side first, then reconnect it in QuickBooks.

  1. Go to the American Express website and sign in.
  2. Select the Account Services tab.
  3. Select Security & Privacy.
  4. Select Manage Partner Permissions, then select Intuit to expand the section.
  5. Select Disconnect to stop the connection.
  6. Go back to QuickBooks Online and connect the account again.

Once you're connected, you're all set to start categorizing and matching your American Express transactions in QuickBooks.

Let us know how it goes, or if you're still seeing the error after trying both of these.

Try opening your QBO account on any private/incognito browser.

Encountering error 591 when connecting your American Express (Amex) bank account or Credit Card to QuickBooks Online (QBO) can happen for a couple of reasons, Louies. I can share the details about this and the steps to resolve it.

Error 591 can occur if the Amex bank or credit card account is already linked to another QuickBooks company for online banking. Another reason is when the connecting process got interrupted in some way.

If your account is previously connected to a different QuickBooks company, we can disconnect and reconnect your Amex account. Here's how:

  1. Open the QuickBooks company the account is currently connected to.
  2. Disconnect the American Express Business account.
  3. Open the QuickBooks company you want to connect the account to.
  4. Connect your American Express Business account.

If the connection process is interrupted, disconnect the account on the American Express website. Then, reconnect it in QuickBooks:

  1. Go to the American Express website.
  2. Select the Account Services tab.
  3. Select Security & Privacy.
  4. Select Manage Partner Permissions and then Intuit to expand the section.
  5. Select Disconnect to stop the connection.
  6. Go back to QuickBooks Online and connect the account again.

If you need to categorize or match transactions after this, let me add these articles as a reference:

Did both and still lot working. My Amex is not connected to another quickbooks. This is the only quickbooks I have. Not getting interrupted either. I can’t use quickbooks if I can’t connect my bank and credit card. Otherwise, quickbooks online is pointless to me.
