Why does QuickBooks Online show an error when entering a reconciliation ending date, and how do I fix it?

This usually happens because your beginning balance doesn't match your bank statement, and QuickBooks Online won't let you move forward with reconciling until that's fixed.

What causes a beginning balance mismatch

A few things typically cause this:

  • The opening balance was entered incorrectly when the account was first set up in QuickBooks
  • Transactions were added that are older than the opening balance, without updating that opening balance entry to reflect the change
  • A previously reconciled transaction got edited, deleted, moved, or unreconciled, which changes the ending balance of your last reconciliation and throws off the beginning balance of the next one
  • A transaction was reconciled manually and never showed up on an actual reconciliation

How to fix it

The fix depends on whether this is your first time reconciling this particular account:

  1. First time reconciling this account: compare your opening balance to your real-world account balance from the day you started tracking transactions in QuickBooks. If they don't match, correct the opening balance directly in the account register.
  2. Already reconciled this account before: select the alert that reads "we can help you fix it." That opens your Reconcile Discrepancy Report, which lists exactly what changed and how it affected your balance, so you can correct each item one by one.
  3. Once your beginning balance matches your statement, head back to the Reconcile page, enter your ending balance and ending date, and select Start reconciling.

If your numbers still don't line up partway through, you don't have to start over. Select Edit info from the reconciliation window at any point to adjust the ending balance or ending date, then keep matching transactions until your difference shows $0.00.

Hello there, mary.

I'll be sure to help fix the issue you encountered about entering any reconciling date in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

If you get your account isn't ready to reconcile yet error message when trying to reconcile in QuickBooks. This means that you have a beginning balance issue, which causes the following:

  • Someone entered an incorrect opening balance when they created the account in QuickBooks.
  • Someone added transactions that are older than the opening balance but didn't edit the original opening balance entry to reflect the change.
  • Someone edited, deleted, moved, or unreconciled an already reconciled transaction. This changes the ending balance of your last reconciliation, which impacts the beginning balance of the next one.
  • Someone manually reconciled a transaction, so it didn't show up on the next reconciliation.

To fix this, you can refer to this article for the complete process: Fix issues for accounts you've reconciled in the past in QuickBooks Online.

However, if you didn't get the error message I mentioned above, can you tell me exactly the specific error message you encountered? That way, I can provide a more accurate answer based on your situation. A screenshot would also be helpful.

I'm leaving this article for future reference in doing and fixing reconciliation concerns: Learn the reconciliation workflow in QuickBooks.

I am having the same issue I think and it is not a reconciliation error but a system error… it is not recognizing the date field as entered… the box remains red after I select the date from the pop-up calendar. And it does not give me an option to manually type in the date. I have cleared my cache. Closed and opened the site. And the error persists on other account reconciliations as well. I am working on an iPad on the desktop site. Please help!

I am having the exact same issue on my iPad as mentioned below by others as of today 05/23/2024 and it is frustrating that intuit has not resolved this system error when so many users are facing the same issue. Please resolve this system error now. This is such a waste of time.

Quickbooks is going to tell you that Firefox works for reconciling.  It works but I’m a Google Chrome user almost exclusively.  I feel your pain and they need to make the changes to get all web browsers to work.  It just makes sense and there are all these users telling them how aggregating this is.

What’s worse is that their 1st level support doesn’t even know this issue exists and will walk you through all the scripted troubleshooting (can’t share screens with an iPad) that does nothing but frustrate the caller/user.

It is ridiculous that a company like intuit closed the ticket on an issue with iPad reconcile date button without resolving the issue in the software/ their system especially when the community using the very same platform has been complaining that the date button does not work. To be told by a QuickBooks team member that I should call QuickBooks and get another ticket opened is preposterous and ridiculous. Guys this is 2024 when we expect the experience of using any of the major browsers (safari / chrome) to be seamless. Why is intuit so outdated in its technology support? Intuit is not delivering on its brand promise and that is just not acceptable. Can someone responsible at Intuit please get involved and support their customers who are asking for a very basic support with their platform. Very disappointed with the solution being offers by their level 1 support. If the level 1 tech can read, they should know better than asking me to contact customer service. It is NOT an issue ONLY at my end. Listen to your customers complaining about this very issue and fix INTUIT system / platform. Someone at INTUIT - PLEASE HELP.
