Why does the Check Detail Report show each check number twice in QuickBooks Online?

I am trying to get accustomed to the new Modern View in reports and I have having some difficulty with the Check Detail Report. When I run the report in Modern View, it shows each check number twice. One says cleared, the other is uncleared or blank. Classic view does not show this. I am trying to figure out if this is a setting issue or a filter that needs adjusting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is super frustrating and making things way more difficult then they need to be.

In QuickBooks Online Modern View, the Check Detail Report lists check transactions by line item rather than as a single summary row. When a check has multiple line items or split entries (or when filtering by specific cleared statuses), each corresponding line or split detail is displayed, which can make a single check number appear on multiple rows.

Customize your Check Detail Report in Modern View

Modern View reports include flexible filtering and display options that can affect how many rows appear for each transaction. Here's how to review and adjust your report settings:

  1. Open the Check Detail Report from the Reports center.
  2. Select Customize.
  3. Review your Filters settings. Check whether the report is set to show all transactions or a subset. Adjusting the cleared/uncleared filter may affect which rows appear.
  4. Review your Rows and Columns settings to make sure the grouping matches what you need.
  5. Select Run report to apply the changes and see the updated results.

Modern View is designed to provide granular transaction detail and uses a different layout engine than Classic View. If you prefer a summary view without split/detail lines, you can switch back to Classic View or customize the report grouping and filters in Modern View.

If you're still seeing unexpected results after trying the customization steps, let us know what filters and groupings you currently have set. That'll help narrow down what's happening.

Hi RCrawford79,

I understand how frustrating it is to deal with duplicate check numbers with the new view of the report interface, especially the Check Detail Report. I see how this makes your tasks harder than they should be.

I recommend that you submit feedback about the changes in the Modern view while we are unable to make changes at the moment. This will allow our engineers to consider making further updates based on user input.

  1. Click on the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Feedback.
  3. Enter a line or two to describe the issue and click Next.

If you have other questions at the moment, feel free to go back to this thread so I can continue to help you.

How is this, two year later, still an issue??

What is the point in a check detail report listing each check twice?

Before I submit the report to our bank, I have to go in and delete, one by one, each duplicate entry.

Time consuming and a waste of time.

I checked out the report after reading your question. Wow, it is awful! And, QB says it will be the only option next month.

How, pray tell, is this supposed to be a useful report?

It's not.
