"Transactions by Payroll Item" report

You can easily create a customized report to contain practically any information you want to see, using display columns and report filters.

To get a Transactions by Payroll Item report which you can group by certain criteria and sort by certain criteria,  start with the Transaction Detail Report in the Reports --> Custom Reports menu.

A generic transaction detail report will open up.  Click on Customize Report.  Set the date range you want.  Go to the Columns section, and select all columns that you want in your report, and de-select any that you don't want.  One of my pet peeves about QB reports is that they don't automatically give you debit and credit columns.  Here is where I add the Debit and Credit Columns, and remove the Amount column.  I also don't want to see the Split & Clr columns, so I remove those as well.  Obviously, you have many choices to customize exactly what you want to see.

While still in the Customize Report window, click on the Filters tab.  In Search Filters field, type Payroll Item.  If you want only specific payroll items, drop down the list which currently says All Payroll Items, and choose Multiple Payroll Items.  Go through the list and check off the Payroll items you want to appear in the report.  To change the name of the report, click on Header/Footer, and override the name of the report to what you want it to be.  Click OK.

If you want to see the transactions grouped by Payroll Item, drop down the list at the top that says Total By, and choose Payroll Item.  Note you can also group these transactions by Employee and a whole host of other choices.   You can also change the sort order at this point by using the drop-down box beside Sort by.

What you now have is a Transactions by Payroll Item report.  Don't forget to Memorize the report so you can access it later.
