You're not imagining it, the Transaction Journal in Modern View doesn't include Amount or Balance columns by default, which is a real gap compared to Classic View. You can add them manually each session, but they won't stick. Here's how to do that, plus a better workaround that'll save you time going forward.
To add Amount and Balance columns for the current session:
- From Reports, search for and open Trial Balance.
- Click a Debit or Credit figure to drill into the Transaction Journal.
- Select the column settings icon at the top of the report.
- Enable Amount and Balance.
Just keep in mind those selections won't save automatically. You'll need to re-enable them
each time. The workaround below is a more reliable option for regular use.
A better option: use Transaction Detail by Account filtered to one account
This report has all the detail you need and can be scoped to a single account, which solves both problems at once:
- Go to Reports and search for Transaction Detail by Account.
- Click Customize.
- Under Filters, find Distribution Account and select the account you want to review.
- Run the report, then save the customized view so it's ready to go next time.

If Amount and Balance aren't appearing even after you enable them, try opening QuickBooks Online in a private or incognito browser window. If that clears it up, your browser cache is likely the culprit.
We hear you that column preferences should stick, especially for accountants who need numbers in every report. If you'd like to send that feedback to the product team, go to Gear icon > Feedback inside QuickBooks Online. Drop a reply if anything isn't working as expected and we'll help sort it out.
