If you're asking about report layouts specifically, QuickBooks Online fully retired classic view for reports, and the "switch to classic view" button is no longer available anywhere in the product. Modern view is now the only reporting experience. If you mean the overall navigation and dashboard redesign instead, that's also a permanent, product-wide change with no option to switch back.

What happened to classic view

Classic reports were phased out, but your data, saved reports, filters, and customizations weren't lost, they were automatically carried over and now display in the modern layout. You don't need to do anything to preserve your existing reports.

What's different in modern view

A few things changed along the way:

  • Reports like the General Ledger and Trial Balance now follow standard accounting order (assets, liabilities, equity, income, expenses).
  • Inactive and zero-balance accounts are hidden by default, though you can adjust filters to bring them back.
  • You can set filters, columns, and groupings all at once instead of applying changes one at a time.
  • Editing a transaction from a drill-down now refreshes the report automatically.
  • The page scrolls in full instead of a small box, and you can use Ctrl+F (or Command+F on Mac) to search within it.

Some visual options, like banded rows and color-coded columns, are only available on QuickBooks Online Advanced and Intuit Enterprise Suite.

Get modern view working the way you want

Since the older layout is fully retired, the best path forward is customizing modern view to fit how you like to work. You can adjust filters, columns, grouping, and display options report by report. See Modify reports in QuickBooks Online for the full walkthrough.

I appreciate your feedback about the new interface in QuickBooks Online, @embservices2013. Let me guide you in switching back to the classic view.

Before doing so, please know that the option added to the software aims to improve user experience by providing new tools and functionalities that make accounting and bookkeeping tasks easier and more efficient. Since you don't like the new display, you can click the Switch to classic view button to use the prior report interface. Refer to the screenshot below for visual guide:

Keep in mind that this option is only available to some reports. If the report you generate doesn't offer the classic view switch, I recommend providing direct feedback to our product developers. They will thoughtfully review your input, identify areas for improvement, and consider integrating them into future updates.

Here's how:

  1. Hit the Gear icon at the top, then select Feedback.
  2. Type in your product suggestions.
  3. Click Next to submit feedback.

You can keep track of your request by visiting our Customer Feedback page.

Furthermore, if you want to personalize the data on the report, you can customize it to your liking. Check out this article for details: Modify reports in QuickBooks Online.

There is also an App called Right Tool that will allow you to tweak many things.  I read about it on here somewhere, but it remembers your preference for the “classic view’ and reports stay in classic view now.

There are a lot of tweaks, but it does work for me.

This new format is TERRIBLE, it was simple before and now it is complicated - and no, I will not change my opinion on this after I "get used to it".  I hate it, my staff hates it - give me the choice again to go back to the "classic" view.
