We always ensure we can provide the best feature when managing invoices, james.
We can easily switch to the old invoice layout in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
Perform the steps below:
Go to the New button.
Select Invoice.
In the upper-right corner, click the Old Layout button.
Then, Leave.
Please know that switching to different invoice styles in QBO is available to selected users only. If you don't have the switch to the old invoice layout option, we recommend submitting feedback. Your feedback will help us improve your experience with QBO and will be shared with our Product Development Team.
Same question. New invoice layout dose not work for my requirements. want to go back to old layout and tried following previous recommendations and my invoice dose not contain button to go back to old layout. not happy
I'm having the exact same issue - the new invoicing doesn't work for me, takes additional steps that are unnecessary for me and gives me errors that don't make any sense. I have no button to go back to the original invoice style. Also not happy.
The Community is here to make your experience better, @cn11.
I understand the new layout in may take some adjustment. The option to switch back to the old layout may not be available as we've rolled out this new invoice experience. I suggest providing feedback on your experience directly to the Product Development team. Their goal is continuous improvement based on user input. This will help ensure future updates better meet the needs of all users.
This new roll out seems to be standard fare for companies now. The new template doesn't allow for progress invoicing on an estimate. That at best is incompetent. How do you expect users to take this kind of "update" seriously when it hampers doing business? How do I handle progress invoicing now? This never should have been rolled out if it didn't include the same features that made the old way useful.
Having the same issue, I need to use progress invoicing and I do not have the button to switch back to the old invoices. I have also left "feedback" as recommended.
I spent some time on the online support chat today and was told
"Upon checking here on our end, if you do not have an option to switch back to the old layout for invoice. You need to use the new layout."
"For the layout for the Invoice, we are now using the new layout and we suggest to our clients to leave a feedback on QuickBooks."
"I truly apologized for that. But that this the new update that we have here on Quickbooks."
which is not a solution. between this issue and over 2 weeks of Novo bank not linking, I'm ready to start looking for a new service where the core features I pay for actually work.
WHERE IS THE PACKING SLIP PRINT BUTTON? WHY DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A CHILD MADE THE INVOICE LAYOUT? WHY DO YOU FORCE THESE CHANGES UPON YOUR CUSTOMERS? HOW COME MY CUSTOMER'S Q/B DOES NOT HAVE THIS NEW INVOICING LAYOUT?
Our engineering team is currently investigating the issue of being unable to see the print button for packing slips in the new invoicing layout. Rest assured that our team is working to resolve this problem at the moment.
We don't have a specific time frame for when this issue will be resolved. However, I suggest reaching out to our online support so they can include you as one of the affected users. This way, you'll receive email updates once the issue has been resolved.
For you to contact our Online Team Support, here's how:
At the top right, click Help.

Please go back to the old layout. New layout is so unnecessary. These are back end features...we do not need them in the front end interface. Terrible terrible. I do not have a button to go to old layout either.
Is Quickbooks willing to commit to not forcing customer to migrate to the "new version" of invoicing? I need to know this as if I'm not able to use the "classic version" moving forward, I'll be forced to leave all QBO products.
Does everyone who is still able to switch back to the old version realize that as of monday you will be automatically switched over to the new version? I don't think quickbooks understands that this new version is not workable for a huge amount of us. People have documented a few of the flaws on here, but there are many more. The main issue is that you cannot customize an invoice template, it sees all the templates as "old templates" so you are stuck with the default template. In this template:
- You cannot edit the shipping field
- No field for SHIP VIA
- No field for TRACKING NUMBER
- You cannot edit / hide many of the fields
- When you print a packing slip it removes your logo and makes the font tiny
I could go on but these are a few right off the bat. I wish we could get some help with this, a lot of us will be forced to a different platform.
We are no longer able to switch back to the old format. The new format is unusable. This might be the most incompetent product rollout ever. We're looking at switching immediately to a different platform.
WHERE IS THE PACKING SLIP PRINT BUTTON? WHY DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A CHILD MADE THE INVOICE LAYOUT? WHY DO YOU FORCE THESE CHANGES UPON YOUR CUSTOMERS? MY AUTOMATED EMAIL TO CUSTOMER HAS MY PERSONAL EMAIL AND NOT MY COMPANY'S EMAIL. THERE IS NO SHIPPED ON DATE. I AM NOT GOING TO EDIT MY CUSTOMERS SHIP TO ADDRESS EVERY TIME I HAVE TO SHIP IT TO THEIR MULTIPLE LOCATIONS THEY HAVE.
YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS WORK BEFORE YOU PUSH IT ONTO YOUR CUSTOMERS FIRST! PLEASE GIVE US BACK THE "OLD LAYOUT" OPTION AGAIN!
THIS IS MY FEEDBACK. THE KIND THAT ALL OF YOUR CUSTOMERS CAN SEE, NOT THE ONE WHERE IT GOES IN YOUR EMAIL TRASH BIN. STOP TELLING US TO KINDLY F OFF, AND RESPECT YOUR CUSTOMER BASE.
OK, so you can now change the ship to address on the invoice. I would be nice to have a drop down of all the saved address for that business (like the desktop pro had). And all the "Print and download", "Print packing slip", "Review and send", "Receive payment", and "Share link" are all in the green button on the lower right of the invoice creation/edit page. The "Edit", "Email view", "PDF view", and "Payor view" at the upper left hand of the page are worthless and should be removed. The invoice and packing list look like they used to.
Still no ship date, and no dedicated area to insert the tracking #.
All these things should have been discovered during the beta testing, but I am guessing EVERYONE probably clicked the "Old layout" so nothing was discovered. Now they are forcing it on us SimpleStart users to beta test it for them before they roll it out to the higher priced users. Free of charge for them, and a annoying hassle for us peasants.
Hello, they have now changed it back to the "new layout" for us pleb simple start subscribers. Invoicing, packing list are all terrible with tiny font that I cannot read and no one here to help to change/correct that. The look is elementary. This here is indeed the true feed back, but they don't care. I am hoping my customers don't think less of my company as I send them crayon drawn packing lists and invoices. I am just waiting till they roll this out to the larger companies (my customers) so they will be forced to listen. Most many of my customers use Q/B. So I will wait (to not rock any boats) in the laze of this company as they try to figure it out. Thank you Q/B, stay awesome.
This new layout is terrible. We will be looking for new accounting service. It no longer works well for our business. Hoping they change the invoice back before we leave. The old style worked just fine. Why keep changing things that are not broken.....
@threesprings @Hmm106 so it's been a year and the "new and improved" Quickbooks invoicing is still awful and broken! Have you found your new accounting software yet?
Our team has found success with Freshbooks for smaller customers and Xero for almost everyone else. Sage and Netsuite are obviously still great all-around options. We've also seen good results for Zoho and Wave.
Hope you guys have found your replacement accounting software!
