How to turn off Modern View for reports?

Every time I open up a report it defaults to "Modern View". I think this view looks horrible, and I would much rather have Classic View continue to be the default. Even when I manually change it to Classic View, if I were to drill down on the transaction details, it still automatically pulls up the transactions details in Modern View. I need to be able to turn this off, so that everything appears in Classic View right away, as it is slowing me down a lot to have to keep changing this. Where can I find the option to turn off Modern View entirely?

The modern view for reports is still a beta feature in QuickBooks Online (QBO), pbbookssr.

Since this is still a test feature of QBO, disabling it permanently is currently unavailable. At this time, you can manually click the Switch to classic view button when pulling up a report in QBO.

Furthermore, you can share your thoughts about this feature after clicking the Switch to classic view button.

Otherwise, you can submit your feedback about this feature directly from your QBO account. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Feedback.
  3. Type in your feedback and suggestions about having the option to use the classic view for reports permanently.
  4. Click Next to submit them.

Additionally, you can check out this article to learn more about how to focus on the details that matter most to you when you pull up reports in QBO: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

Keep me posted if you still have questions or concerns about managing your reports in QBO. I'll be here, ready to assist you. Keep safe!

I agree - the modern view is horrible - can't believe I am unable to set so I can open in Classic - but have to keep changing each time.  Can you please at the very least add an option to allow us to set reports to always open in Classic if we choose.  Thank you

Hello, I just wondered if anyone had found a way to turn off Modern View? I also do not like it, Classic View is much better and I am also wasting time constantly defaulting back to it. It feels like QuickBooks has tried to fix something that wasn't broken and made it a worse user experience.

I want my default report view to be classic view.  Please give us this option!

I'm sorry, but telling people to send feedback is not a solution.  Please turn this stupid thing off.  It is very annoying.

I agree with the points of the original poster, and I would add that "Modern view" is also creating more work. When I pull up a report, by default, sections are collapsed for some reason.

The reason I pulled up the report is to look at the data - why am I having to click something else in order to see it? The classic view presents all data immediately. This "feature" of the modern view is debilitating our use of the product.

QuickBooks Online has retired Classic reports and Modern is now the only reporting experience. When this thread was active there was a "Switch to classic view" button (and, as you noticed, drill-downs still opened in Modern), but that toggle has since been removed. Since Classic isn't available to fall back on anymore, here's how to make Modern show your data the way you need, including seeing everything at once.

See all the detail immediately (fix the collapsed sections)

The collapsed-by-default behavior is the most common complaint, and you can change it:

  • Use Expand all (or the expand control) so every section opens fully instead of collapsed.
  • Once you've set a report the way you like, including expanded sections, columns, and grouping, save it as a custom report so it opens that way next time. This is the closest thing to a default, and it sticks per report.

Rebuild the accounting detail you had in Classic

Most of what people miss from Classic can be reproduced in Modern:

  • Add the columns you need (account, name, memo/description, split, transaction number) so drill-downs and detail reports show the same fields.
  • Group and subtotal by account, customer, or vendor to match your old layout.
  • Filter to the accounts, dates, or transaction types you want, then save.
  • Your existing saved custom reports, groups, and schedules carried over automatically, so saved reports still run.

Make it easier to read

Adjust column widths and report density, use the full-page scroll, and use Ctrl + F (Windows) or Command + F (Mac) to find within a report. If a report still isn't laid out the way you want on screen, export to Excel or PDF for full control.

Sharing feedback

You can still send feedback through Settings (the gear icon), then Feedback, and it reaches the product team, though to be straight with you, it won't bring Classic back now that it's retired. It's most useful for flagging a specific behavior (like collapsed sections or a missing field) so those Modern gaps get prioritized.
