I can modify the "Sales Receipt" form, but when I try to issues a sales receipt, it is not linked to the client invoice and does record the payment against the actual invoice.

Modifying an invoice payment receipt is a fantastic feature that lets you align it with your business preferences and enhance your customer’s experience, steve385.

While QuickBooks Online (QBO) does not currently support customising invoice Payment Receipts, I recommend that you send this feedback directly to our product development team. Your insights help us continuously improve and meet your needs more effectively.

Here's how:

  1. Click on the Gear icon, then choose Feedback.
  2. Share your product improvement ideas.
  3. Click Next to submit.

Regarding your second concern, the reason a sales receipt is not linked to an invoice is that a Sales receipt is used for immediate payments, while an Invoice tracks a payment that is due at a later date.

If you’ve already created a sales receipt for your customer, you’ll need to delete it and use the Invoice feature to record the sale instead. After the customer makes a payment, you can apply it directly to the invoice using the Receive Payment feature.
