How do you activate the customer field when posting an accounts receivable transaction?

Kudos on your first post in the Community! I'll be glad to assist by answering any questions you may have. 

If you're referring to journal entries, QuickBooks only allows you to post entries that are associated with accounts in your Chart of Accounts. If your question is related to something different, please share more info on what you're referring to. You're more than welcome to send screenshots of what you're seeing on your screen.
