    Welcome to the Community, jchuparepair.

You've come to the right place for assistance with QuickBooks. I'm happy to provide some info so you're able to correct the sales tax returns in your Online account.

To correct previously paid sales tax returns showing as overdue in QuickBooks Online, you'll need to record the payments within the Sales Tax Center to change their status to closed. Here are the steps to get the returns closed:

    • Record Historical Payments: If the payments exist in your bank register but not in the tax center, go to Taxes > Sales Tax, select the agency, and click Record Payment on the overdue period. Make sure the payment date matches the actual date it was paid to the agency.
    • Remove Duplicate Payments: If you have both a "Record Payment" entry and a manual check/expense, the payment will show as duplicated or incorrect. Navigate to the bank register, find the transaction, and unmatch/delete the manual entry, keeping only the Sales Tax payment record.
    • Add an Adjustment: If the amount is slightly off due to discounts, credits, or penalties, select + Add an adjustment in the Sales Tax center to balance the return.
    • Check "Paid Through" Date: Verify your Sales Tax settings are updated with the correct "Start of Sales Tax Period" to prevent future returns from appearing as overdue.

It's always a good idea to discuss these types of actions with your accountant to make sure everything aligns with your business setup and workflows. If you don't currently have an accountant, you can find one specifically trained in QuickBooks in your area by searching here: Find a ProAdvisor.
