Question

I found some back-dated entries affecting sales tax, which were not included in any tax filings. How do I get these amounts included in the next filing?

There is a $4,000 debit balance in the HST account that does not get included in the filings. This traces back to A/P bills from 2024, entered subsequent to the final 2024 HST filing. How can I claim these input tax credits now?

Back-dated bills are linked to a closed filing period, so QuickBooks Online (QBO) won't automatically transfer the $4,000 ITC debit to the next return. You can manually add the adjustment to the current open return using the sales tax adjustment feature in the Tax Centre.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to Taxes.
  2. Select Sales Tax.
  3. Click on Prepare return for the current open period.
  4. Add an adjustment and enter the ITC amount.
  5. Select the appropriate tax line (ITC's or Input Tax Credits), then Save.

After completing these steps, the adjustment will then be included when you file the current period's return.
