Need help from Hawaii QB Online users & GET issues

Has anyone in Hawaii that uses QB Online found a way to set up a GET item in products & services to use instead of the sales tax module?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can set up a custom service item to manually track and collect your Hawaii General Excise Tax (GET) instead of using the automated sales tax module. It keeps your tax tracking accurate and tailored to your business needs.

Here's how to set this up in QuickBooks Online:

  1. Select the Gear icon in the top-right corner, and choose Products and services.
  2. Select New, then choose Service.
  3. Name the item "Hawaii GET".
  4. Leave the Sales price/rate field blank so you can enter the exact dollar amount on each invoice.
  5. In the Income account dropdown menu, choose the account you want to use to track your GET.
  6. In the Tax section, select Non-taxable.
  7. Select Save and close.

When you create an invoice, add your regular products or services first and make sure the standard sales tax feature at the bottom is not applied. On the last line, select your new Hawaii GET item and manually enter the calculated tax amount.

When you pay the State of Hawaii, record a check or expense in QuickBooks and categorize it to the exact account you chose for your service item. This reduces your balance by matching your collected tax with your paid tax.

We highly recommend consulting an accountant about which specific account to use. While QuickBooks requires mapping a service item to an income account dropdown, your accountant may advise creating a custom liability account to keep your business revenue separate from tax collections.
