I made 4 payments and ended up with an additional 4 'expenses' which are showing as deposits. I think they need deleting but don't know what i did wrong to get them

Welcome to the Community page, 

So it sounds like you have probably bilk added the transactions, so if you delete them, this will put them back on the bank for review page and then you will be able to start again, especially if you have manually created the transactions, you'll be able to match them up rather then add them on the banking page.
