Question

I've entered wrong figures in VAT return, I need to start again, how is this done? Clicking adjust again simply adds the correct figure on to the figure i need to remove

Hi @ejbbuildingprojects,

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community! Thank you for bringing this topic to our attention. I understand how challenging it can be to realize there’s a mistake in your VAT return and feel like you’re stuck trying to fix it. Don’t worry, we can work through this together and ensure things get resolved.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), VAT returns can’t be fully wiped clean since they are based on recorded transactions. However, you can adjust your current VAT account to correct errors on past returns, as long as they’re below the reporting threshold, not deliberate, and from within the last four years.

To correct an adjustment:

  1. Navigate to VAT, then go to the Overview tab.
  2. Select Prepare return.
  3. Click the Adjust link in the Box 1 row.
  4. Enter a negative adjustment equal to the incorrect adjustment previously made, complete the necessary fields, then click Save.

Please know that manual adjustments affect the VAT control or suspense account. If you're unsure about the adjustment, reaching out to your accountant can help ensure accuracy.

If the VAT return has already been submitted, contact HMRC to report the error. They will provide instructions on either correcting the mistake or amending it in your next return.

You can always reply or reach out to us again if you need anything else with VAT or any QBO-related tasks. We're always here to guide and assist you whenever you need help.
