When i log my purchases do i log the vat amount on only the items i can claim vat back on?

To verify if you're only going to add the VAT amount to the reclaimable tax items, you'll have to check with your government or tax adviser. 

However, I can help you with creating a custom tax and set it up as reclaimable. Here's how:

1. Click Taxes, then go to VAT.
2. Click Add tax, then choose Custom tax.
3. Fill in the necessary fields.
4. Put a check mark in the This tax is collected on purchases box, then enter a purchase rate.
5. Put a check mark in the Purchase tax us reclaimable box, then click Save.
