Question

I am a self-employed painter. Can I claim mileage for driving from home to the job site? If so, what is the "business" purpose? Drop down options don't have it.

Hi quintonc-gnspes-,

It's great to see you in Community.  Welcome!  It's important that you have a full understanding of what business expenses you can claim and ensure you're within government guidelines, when tracking mileage in QuickBooks Self-Employed.  I'd be happy to provide the information you need so you're on the right track with your work!

If you use your vehicle for business and personal use, you can only deduct the portion of expenses relating to your business income.  You'll need to keep a record of the total number of kilometers driven as well as the kilometers driven to earn your income.  For full details of motor vehicle expenses, follow this link to the CRA website.  To assist you with how to record this in QuickBooks Self-Employed, I recommend reaching out to your accountant for their expertise and the best course of action.  If you don't have one, we can help you locate a ProAdvisor in your local area.

Please feel free to reach back out if you have any other questions.  We'd be glad to assist!
