Question

transferring rrsp income from deceased spouse to surviving spouse

I have a deceased spouse with a T4RSP with an amount in box 34 (amounts deemed received on death), the surviving spouse has a T4RSP with an amount in box 18 (refund of premiums) and a contribution amount equaling the amount in box 18 of their T4RSP

I have entered the surviving spouses info and there is no tax owing on this amount

I have entered the deceased info and am showing taxes owed for the T4RSP however I am of the believe that there should not be taxes owing as the RSP income was transferred to the surviving spouse. I am using profile as my tax software. Is there something on the deceased spoused return that I need to enter to defer the taxes on the T4RSP as the amount was given to his spouse (his beneficiary) This RRSP was unmatured.

Managing the deemed disposition of an RRSP following a death can be complex. I recommend consulting a tax professional to ensure accurate filing, specifically to ensure that the income reported in Box 34 of the deceased's T4RSP is properly offset by a refund of premiums deduction when transferred to a surviving spouse. They can also verify whether it qualifies for a tax-deferred rollover.

Once confirmed, contact ProFile's live support, as they can direct you through the specific data-entry steps and guide you on which field triggers the deduction on the deceased's final return, assuring the tax balance updates correctly.
