Hi there, lorne. Let’s work together to determine why a September invoice, paid in October, is showing as an October sale, so we can ensure your records are accurate.

On an accrual basis, revenue is recognized on the date the invoice is issued, not the date of payment. With this, can you provide more details about where you’re noticing this issue? Are you reviewing a report or checking another section? Any additional information will help clarify the situation.

Now, there are a couple of reasons why an invoice dated in September, paid in October, could still appear as a sale in October:

  • The invoice date may have been changed or entered incorrectly. You can check the invoice to confirm if it’s dated in September.
  • The payment may have been recorded as a sales receipt instead of applied to the invoice.

As a next step, you can run a Profit & Loss report for September using the Accrual basis. By drilling down into the income account, you’ll be able to identify any discrepancies.
